Tattoo Artist

About

Tattoo artistry has been around for a long time. The oldest surviving tattoos are those found on Ötzi the Iceman, a mummy found in the Ötz valley in the Alps who dates from around 5000BC.

Whether ancient or modern, all tattoo artists use creative and artistic skills to apply a permanent design onto a client's skin.

Some clients will visit tattoo artists will a clear brief on what they want; while others seek advice on the size, color, design and placement of their body art.

Most tattoo artists require a license, and can learn the trade via apprenticeship.

The nature of the work demands tattoo artists maintain a safe and clean work environment: wearing gloves when working with broken skin; sterilizing tattoo equipment and tools; and disinfecting work surfaces.

Practitioners create a space for the people they are helping, and let them bring the content (rather than a teacher or mentor whose job it is to impart education and information). An impartial stance means being in a place of non-judgement, of holding a space of psychological safety, and maintaining an equal voice to all those taking part.
