Coach-ability and the Desire to Coach Others

Ayah had to work hard at developing coaching skills, but through regular practice had become a much better leader and manager for her team. Along the way Ayah also became more coachable - she own boss noticed a big difference in the way feedback was received and actioned.

Coaches generally have high emotional intelligence: they're good at understanding and relating to people, and they're interested in people.

To be coachable you need to be able to show empathy, vulnerability, possess strong communication and questioning skills, be able to listen and be patient.

Providing feedback, being tactful and diplomatic are also key assets when it comes to both being a coach and being coachable.

Whenever we make a mistake, we're faced with a choice: we can choose not to admit that something is wrong, which may doom us to repeat the same mistake in the future; we can inadvertently ignore the fact that we did something wrong; or we can figure out why we made the mistake and change our behavior so that we don't repeat it.

Practitioners create a space for the people they are helping, and let them bring the content (rather than a teacher or mentor whose job it is to impart education and information). An impartial stance means being in a place of non-judgement, of holding a space of psychological safety, and maintaining an equal voice to all those taking part.
